Description
WWII USN US Navy Torpedo Gyroscope MK12-1 Gyro Stainless Steel. It's quite a unique conversation piece. The interior geared flywheel spins easily within a central stainless housing, and this assembly spins easily between a ball bearing gimbal stainless frame. This is the main gyroscopic guidance mechanism for a WWII torpedo which delivered an explosive charge of 507 pounds of TNT or 668 pounds of TPX. WWII era torpedoes using these gyros could be fired from a submarine, surface ship, PT boat or dropped from an aircraft. The gyro kept the torpedo headed on a straight course, not allowing it to go in circles. The entire gyroscope is made of stainless steel and bronze. It's ability to spin smoothly is absolutely fascinating. It is finely crafted, with expert, precision workmanship and is remarkably beautiful! The gyro weighs about 4.5 pounds. Gyroscope measurements: Width 4 3/4", Height 4 1/2" Both pieces in the center section spin. The gears spin left or right, while the main center piece spins forward or backward. The outer section supports the gyro as it spins, as shown.
